CHAPTER SIX

COMING BACK UP AFTER BEING DOWN

It is an individual responsibility to always have a positive outlook on life and to feel good about themselves. Each day that you look into the mirror, you should have something positive to say about the person in the mirror. The best way to start each awakening day is by just thanking God for another day of life. We should be grateful to experience one more day and to behold the beauty of God’s creations. Although, there are things in this life that can bring you down and make you feel as though you can’t get back up again. Regardless of what our situation might be, we are to remember that with God all things are possible and that he is our present help in the times of trouble.

Keeping a positive attitude and selecting positive people to be within your support circle is most important to overcome adversities in life. Never entertain negativism but always be and speak positive in every negative situation. We are to remove ourselves from any form of negativity. Dwelling continuously on negativity will eventually have a negative impact upon you. Therefore, it is vitally important to never allow negativism to impact our life.

The enemy does not want anyone to have a peaceful and good quality of life. An unfilled life can lead to a life of depression. Feeling depressed or sad because of the loss of a love one is a normal reaction, however it is not healthy to remain in this state too long. Apparently, some conditions of depression maybe something beyond sadness. It may well be clinical depression which is a treatable medical condition.

According to the DSM-IV, a manual used to diagnose mental disorders, depression occurs when you have at least five of the following symptoms at the same time:

• A depressed mood during most of the day, particularly in the morning

• Fatigue or loss of energy almost every day

• Feelings of worthlessness or guilt almost every day

• Impaired concentration, indecisiveness Insomnia (an inability to sleep) or hypersomnia (excessive sleeping) almost every day

• Markedly diminished interest or pleasure in almost all activities nearly every day

• Recurring thoughts of death or suicide (not just fearing death)

• A sense of restlessness or being slowed down

• Significant weight loss or weight gain

A key sign of depression is either depressed mood or loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed. For an indication of depression, these signs should be present most of the day either daily or nearly daily for at least two weeks. In addition, the depressive symptoms may cause clinically significant distress or impairment. Depression may not be due to the direct effects of a substance, for example, a drug or medication. Nor can they be the result of a medical condition such as hypothyroidism. Finally, systems that occur within two months of the loss of a love one is not considered to be clinical depression. The preventive measures of depression is to first acknowledge the condition and secondly do not hesitate to get help.
